Who Is TylaDubya

IN THE BEGINING

Beatboxing since 2010, TylaDubya has competed in international beatbox battles, performed around the country, and developed a booming YouTube channel. TylaDubya was first introduced to beatboxing in his Junior year of high school when his friend showed him how to beatbox to the song “My Humps” by The Black Eyed Peas. He instantly fell in love with everything about the art form. Eager to learn more about it, he began to research beatboxers and sound tutorials on YouTube. His passion continued to grow as he learned and practiced new sounds, composed his own music, collaborated with other musicians, and beatboxed 24/7. During his Senior year of high school, he performed on stage for the first time at a school talent competition where he won first place. Later that year, he returned to the stage wowing his peers at Senior Prom. These experiences are the foundation for TylaDubya’s drive for beatboxing – a foundation from which he has built and continues to build his passion and profession.

A CAPPELLA

In 2012, TylaDubya shocked Symfonics – the University of Mary Washington’s premier co-ed a cappella group – with his beatbox audition. Having only every thought of beatboxing as “boots n’ cats,” the group sat, jaws open, as TylaDubya re-defined their understanding of beatboxing. TylaDubya’s unique contribution to the a cappella group received rumbling approval from the judges and audience at the 2013 Richmond Rhythm Competition where Symfonics took home the first place trophy. Only a year later, he received an award for being the best beatboxer at an a cappella competition hosted at Christopher Newport University. As the years went on, TylaDubya built a name for himself around the school, performing during the intermission for Symfonics’ semester-end concert seven semesters in a row. He finished off his collegiate a cappella career with his senior solo “We Go Down” by Krewella – an arrangement that successfully combined dubstep with a cappella.  TylaDubya’s four years of a cappella experience expanded his knowledge of music and pushed him to reach new levels in beatboxing.

BEATBOX BATTLES

Battling since 2014, TylaDubya has gained an appreciation for the importance of stage performance, crowd engagement, musicality, power, and technique.  He stormed into the battle scene during the 2014 American Beatbox Championships where he made a name for himself during the elimination rounds when he tied for the last available spot with two internationally recognized competitors. He returned stronger the following years and placed top 16 in 2015 and top 8 in both 2016 and 2017. TylaDubya has also competed in the Midwest Beatbox Battle where he placed top 8 in 2015 and 2016 and became the Vice Champion in 2017. Also in 2017, TylaDubya won first place at the Beatbox Legends Battle in Atlanta, Georgia, becoming the first ever Beatbox Legends Champion. TylaDubya continues to compete in beatbox battles as they challenge his creativity and push him as a performer, but more than that, he believes that the best part of a battle is that the beatbox community comes together, from around the world, to listen to each other’s talent.

YOUTUBE

Since joining YouTube in 2015, TylaDubya has amassed thousands of subscribers, or as they are better known, his “Dubscribers.” YouTube, and more specifically, video making, has always been a passion of his. He started by making ridiculous videos with his friends in middle school and now is known for producing high-quality beatboxing content. He plans, films, edits, and publishes various types of beatboxing related video content on his channel. Whether it is a tutorial on a beatbox sound, a beatbox reaction compilation, a song cover, or an original track, TylaDubya’s channel stays unique and true to his passion. TylaDubya has recently collaborated with well-known YouTubers: Swissbeatbox, BeatboxTelevision, and Mike Tompkins – a well-known music producer with over two million subscribers. TylaDubya was featured in an a cappella mash-up video that Thompkins showcased at Brandcast 2017 – a massive YouTube advertiser event. In addition to entertaining and teaching through his channel, TylaDubya works closely with companies to promote products that will prove helpful to inspiring beatboxers in their practice.
